Civil War Trails

Dana joined the Trails team in January 2021. He has been drawn to American history his entire life, and has been writing and editing Civil War content for more than 30 years. You may also know his name as the editor of Civil War Times magazine. He loves to tramp battlefields, and loves to see people exploring history through Trails waysides. Dana is a collector (hoarder?) of early 19th-century antiques and photography, and has way more old hand tools than he needs. He puts those to use restoring his 18th-century home at the foot of South Mountain, Md., that he shares with his wife, Heidi, two overindulged dogs, and three self-important cats. When it comes to libations and food, it’s a fervent yes to craft beer and a hard pass on oysters.
